About Drexel University
Drexel University has achieved national recognition in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, retaining its designation as an “R1 Doctoral University: Very High Research Activity.” Drexel is one of 146 institutions out of approximately 3,900 to receive this prestigious classification, indicating the highest level of research activity. Notably, Drexel is one of only 39 private universities to earn the distinction.
Drexel University College of Medicine
The College of Medicine supports clinical and basic research activities, fosters interdisciplinary programs to develop and implement research, facilitates translational research, and promotes mentoring to advance the training of physicians and scientists.
The College has established one of the largest centers for spinal cord research in the mid-Atlantic region and founded one of the leading centers for malaria study in the nation. Collaborative projects leveraging Drexel University's technological expertise push the frontiers of nanomedicine and neuroengineering. Many research programs take advantage of cross-campus expertise, with notable collaborations between College of Medicine faculty – both basic scientists and clinicians – and Drexel faculty in engineering or biomedical engineering. The College of Medicine, in a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University called the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center Research Consortium, collaboratively pursues scientific research in the fight against cancer. The Research Consortium includes seven Drexel colleges and schools including the College of Medicine, the Dornsife School of Public Health, the College of Nursing and Health Professions, the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Computing and Informatics and the College of Engineering. Drexel University brings substantial strength to the Research Consortium in viral oncogenesis, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and geospatial analysis which adds important new dimensions to cancer research. |
School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems (BIOMED):
Drexel’s BIOMED, has pushed the boundaries of science and technology for half a century and has been recognized as a model of interdisciplinary collaboration within Drexel, where breaking down the barriers between fields is a strategic priority. BIOMED research areas include: Bioinformatics and Computational Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biomechanics, Cardiovascular Engineering, Cell and Gene Therapy, and Drug Delivery.
BIOMED also houses the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, providing financial support for translating discoveries from the laboratory to patients.

College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP):
The College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP) has more than a century-long history of educating nurses and health professionals. Since 2002, CNHP has embraced the practical ingenuity of Drexel through the refinement and development of more than 84 undergraduate and graduate nursing and health professions programs characterized by innovation and excellence. We prepare leaders and change agents who want to address the social and structural determinants that prevent many people from attaining their full health potential. Through curriculum, experiential learning and cross-cutting research, we tackle the core problems facing health systems and health equity.
CNHP’s home base is the Health Sciences Building, a state-of-the-art facility that brings together Drexel’s health-related fields of study in one modern space. For the first time in Drexel’s history, CNHP, the College of Medicine and its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies share spaces for interdisciplinary education, teamwork and growth.
CNHP researchers are focused on aging, innovation in food science and sustainability, substance use disorders, mental health, biomechanics, physical disabilities and pain, community health and nutrition and cardiometabolic health. CNHP faculty researchers published just over 500 publications in the last five years with the majority broadly focused on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, caregiving and aging, music and art therapies, child and adolescent health, exercise and rehabilitation sciences, nutrition science and more.
