About Drexel University
Drexel University has achieved national recognition in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, retaining its designation as an “R1 Doctoral University: Very High Research Activity.” Drexel is one of 146 institutions out of approximately 3,900 to receive this prestigious classification, indicating the highest level of research activity. Notably, Drexel is one of only 39 private universities to earn the distinction.
College of Medicine:
Drexel University College of Medicine represents the consolidation of two venerable medical schools with rich and intertwined histories: Hahnemann Medical College and Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Established in 1848 and 1850, respectively, they were two of the earliest medical colleges in the United States, and Woman's was the first degree-granting medical school for women in the world. Today, our innovation includes exploring technological advances in medicine while remembering that behind each disease is a person who deserves compassion and respect.

The College has established one of the largest centers for spinal cord research in the mid-Atlantic region, and founded one of the leading centers for malaria study in the nation. Collaborative projects leveraging Drexel University's technological expertise push the frontiers of nanomedicine and neuroengineering. Many research programs take advantage of cross-campus expertise, with notable collaborations between our College faculty – both basic scientists and clinicians – and Drexel faculty in engineering or biomedical engineering.
School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems:
Our School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, located in University City neighborhood, was founded in 1961 as the United States' first Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute. Drexel BIOMED has pushed the boundaries of science and technology for half a century. Founded on the excellent basic research at Drexel BIOMED, our teaching, translational research, and service activities are focused on achieving clinical and industrial relevance, thus creating the educational experiences that prepare our students for emerging biomedical challenges. We have been recognized as a model of interdisciplinary collaboration within Drexel University, where breaking down the barriers between fields is a strategic priority as the institution forges ahead to become "One University." Likewise, our primary translational research partner, the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, has identified Drexel BIOMED as a global best practice in moving discoveries from the laboratory to patients.
Our research areas include: Bioinformatics and Computational Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biomechanics, Cardiovascular Engineering, and Drug Delivery.
